| Abstract |
| This paper focuses on using loop detector data for estimating velocity of freeway traffic. In the paper, the authors present a new approach, using aggregation methodology, to estimate velocity and reduce the impact of long vehicles in the original traffic measurements. The authors first present a review of the state of the practice and the related shortcomings of parameter estimation from single loop detectors. This is followed by a description of the proposed alternative method for estimating velocity. The report concludes by contrasting the new approach with conventional estimates. |
